Repair

Works on Paper

2018

The work in this series reflects my interest in the constant push/pull of human experience between moments of joy and pain. I am inspired and deeply moved by the Japanese art form Kintsugi, in which broken ceramics are repaired with gold lacquer rather than thrown away. These drawings are intricate, but often torn or partially damaged. I repair the tears with thread in a meditative, time consuming process. In making these pieces that are more beautiful as they are repaired, I think about how a philosophy of repair might be applied to our treatment of people who we’re quick to throw away and incarcerate, to our increasingly divisive politics, to the breakages in our institutions.
